Epidemiology of patients with central nervous system infections, mainly neurosurgical patients: a retrospective study from 2012 to 2019 in a teaching hospital in China

Abstract Background Central nervous system (CNS) infections are relatively rare but associated with high mortality worldwide. Empirical antimicrobial therapy is crucial for the survival of patients CNS infections, and should be based on knowledge pathogen distribution antibiotic sensitivities. The aim this study was to investigate features pathogens in North China evaluate risk factors multi-drug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infections. Methods A retrospective conducted positive cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cultures a teaching hospital from January 2012 December 2019. following data were collected: demographic characteristics, laboratory data, causative organisms sensitivity results. Data analyzed SPSS 16.0. Univariate analysis binary logistic regression analyses performed identify MDR Results total 72 diagnosed 86 isolates identified. proportions Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria fungi 59.3, 30.2 10.5%, respectively. predominant Coagulase-negative Staphylococci . Acinetobacter baumannii , Escherichia coli Klebsiella spp. bacteria. Compared 2012–2015 years, proportion increased markedly during 2016–2019 years. Streptococcus pneumoniae Enterococcus faecium had 100% vancomycin, teicoplanin linezolid. sensitive tigecycline. amikacin, meropenem imipenem. overall rate 30.6%.
